Hours - Monday to Friday 42.5 hours per week inclusive of a 1 hour unpaid break

Salary - £40,000 - £45,000 per annum

Purpose of Job

The Transport Manager will oversee and optimise our transport and logistics operations, ensuring efficient, cost-effective, and compliant delivery of goods. The role requires a hands-on leader who can manage fleet operations, driver performance, route planning, and regulatory compliance while continuously improving efficiency and service levels. This role is responsible for holding and maintaining a valid Transport Operator’s Licence.

Job Description

  • Ensure that the Transport Department is operating effective and efficiently daily, ensuring on-time deliveries and cost efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with Transport legislation (Drivers Regulations, Working Time Directive, and Road Traffic Act).
  • Ensure employee conformance with Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Manage fleet maintenance, ensure vehicles are serviced and maintained in line with the set-out maintenance planner and accurate records are kept and maintained.
  • Ensure working time records are recorded and controlled.
  • Ensure all Digi cards and vehicle units are downloaded, and records kept.
  • Ensure all driver infringements are monitored, controlled, and discussed in all cases.
  • Ensure all transport documentation is maintained to conform to the legal responsibilities of the company.
  • To set, monitor and work within the set-out company budget.
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained for company KPI targets and records.
  • Plan all labour requirements to ensure customer requirements are fulfilled.
  • Ensure invoices are passed and purchase orders issued for all work carried out.
  • Monitor diesel usage and mpgs of the fleet.
  • To make any amendments to Working Instructions in line with Departmental changes.
  • Liaise with the company insurance broker/company with regards all group accidents
  • Ensure that appropriate training is provided to all Transport personnel.
  • Oversee route planning and routes covered.
  • Ensure staff pay and adjustments are completed

Health & Safety

  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment by adhering to all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Take reasonable care of your own health and safety, as well as that of others who may be affected by your actions or omissions.
  • Promptly report any hazards, unsafe practices, incidents, or near misses to your line manager or the Health & Safety team.
  • Cooperate with management on all matters relating to health and safety, including attending mandatory training and following issued guidance or instructions.
  • Use equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and as instructed to minimise risk.
  • Participate in risk assessments and contribute to the identification and control of workplace hazards.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement in workplace safety by actively engaging in health and safety initiatives and suggestions.

Job Requirements

Essentials

  • Experience in transport management, logistics, or fleet operations within food manufacturing, FMCG, or distribution
    CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Transport Management (Essential).
  • Strong knowledge of transport regulations, compliance (DVSA, Operator License), and health & safety requirements.
    Proven track record in cost control, route optimisation, and improving transport efficiency
  • Leadership experience, managing and developing driver teams and logistics staff.
  • Ability to use Transport Management Systems (TMS) and fleet tracking software.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, working with internal teams and external partners.

Desirable

  • NEBOSH or IOSH certification in Health & Safety (Desirable).
  • Experience with logistics automation, telematics, and vehicle tracking systems.
